Blouin Division is pleased to present an exhibition of Matthew Feyld’s new work.

Since Malevich’s White Square on a White Background (1918), monochromy has given rise to a long line of painters who have never ceased—and continue—to challenge and dazzle us. From Rodchenko to Klein, by way of Kelly, Reinhardt, and so many others, including Montreal painters Claude Tousignant and Guy Pellerin, the exploration of the color wheel has yielded masterful works. This quest continues to provide fertile ground. Matthew Feyld’s paintings are part of this resolutely radical path.

Marcel Duchamp maintained that it is the viewer who completes the work. Here, then, are some clues that illuminate the journey. At first glance, disarmingly simple, Feyld’s paintings take the form of basic shapes: squares and rectangles, circles and half-moons. Their dimensions are multiples of four (e.g., 16 × 16 inches). Their surfaces are painted in a single, highly saturated color of a singular tone. Closer observation reveals surfaces that are sometimes almost smooth, sometimes more porous. They are built up through the layering of different colors, a process that continues until a value asserts itself. Traces of brushstrokes, either vertical or horizontal, reveal the systematic nature of the gesture. In some series, one or four indented dots enliven the monochrome plane. The edges bear traces of underlying layers of color. Finally, a record of the chromatic progression toward the canvas’s final value is provided on the reverse. All these clues lead us into the poetic realm to which the artist invites us.
