Organized by the Toronto Contemporary Syndicate, Arsenal Contemporary Art Toronto is pleased to present a two-person exhibition by Matthew Feyld and Francine Savard. This duo of artists are comrades in their respective aesthetic formal research. Feyld’s works are often centered around a single coloured dot. Layers upon layers of colours are painstakingly applied with mathematic precision around a single core on the surface of the painting. The result is a monochromatic surface that yields the impression of an uncontested simplicity. Yet, it is the artist’s diligent practice and careful examination that has come to defined his artistic process.

In turn, Francine Savard’s swatches of colours occupy the wall space in an architectural fashion. Under her skillful manipulation, rectangles of colour of various shapes generate a visual feat as they appear to shoot out of their post and leap into the space, momentarily confusing the perception of the viewer. In fact, the majority of the works in the exhibition are an homage to the minimalist sculptures of American artist Anne Truitt, known for eschewing industrial process and instead laboriously making her impeccable sculptures by hand. This consideration for craftsmanship is also present in Savard’s equally irreproachable pieces.

By bringing their work together in the gallery, Feyld and Savard’s joined proposal is a testament to the strenuous efforts to make something look effortless.
